Some of the items featured in the Autumn 1989 (Vol. 23, No. 1) issue of ‘New Zealand Deaf News’:

  • The NZ Deaf News made a return after three years of the ‘NFD Journal’ due to popular demand, published by the NZ Association of the Deaf. 
  • $18,500 was fundraised for the Bruce McHattie Memorial Trust, through the 10th Annual One Day Charity Golf Benefit for the Deaf, by the Auckland Leagues Club. 
  • A search begins for a ‘Communication Trainer’, a deaf person who is an expert in sign language, and who also has experience in training deaf people to teach sign language to hearing people. 
  • ADS Inc has its first Leadership Training Weekend with four trainers: Daniel Beech, John Hunt, Dulcie McKie and Laurie Schischka. 
  • Tauranga is looking to form a Deaf Club very soon with lots of young deaf interested.

Teaching sign language in preparation for the Christchurch 1989 World Deaf Games

Once New Zealand was awarded the host of the XVIth World Deaf Games at Los Angeles 1985, there was a realisation that sign language classes needed to commence in preparation for Christchurch 1989.
