What information does SignDNA collect?

You may browse and access information contained within SignDNA’s website without providing any personal information. However when you visit SignDNA some general non-personal information about your visit is collected automatically. SignDNA collects three (3) types of information when you visit and use the website:

  1. If you voluntarily provide personal information (e.g. through submitting an online form or email requests), we will only use that information to communicate with you. We will keep any such information secure and confidential and will not give it to any third parties.
  2. Data collected automatically such as the type of computer, mobile device or other device you use to access SignDNA, as well as IP address, geolocation information, unique device identifiers, browser type, browser language and other preferences are automatically collected when you use the website, including via cookies. This helps SignDNA get a better understanding of who is using our website and how they are accessing it. For example, are our users mostly from one area? Are they accessing our site through mobile phones or computers? Are some browsers working better than others on our site? This information helps us make decisions about future improvements to the archive.
  3. The search terms you used, the pages you visited on our websites and the links you clicked on, the date and time you visited the website, the referring website (such as Google) that linked you to SignDNA. This information tells us what archive content is of most and least interest to our visitors, and helps us to make the online archive more useful and relevant.

Privacy Act 2020

SignDNA respects your privacy. We follow the information privacy principles set out in the Privacy Act 2020. If you send us personal information (for example, your email address when asking a question or in donating an item), we will only use this personal information for the purpose for which it was provided (e.g. responding to your question or to discuss the item you want to donate). We protect your personal information and will not disclose it to any third parties, except as authorised by law or by you.

Take-Down Requests

SignDNA frequently receives videos and other such recordings at events from the community, and publishes these on our website and social media channels. If we are recording the event ourselves, we will try our best to let people know they are being recorded at the time. If any member of the public objects to a recording or photo of themselves appearing online, either created by SignDNA or donated by a contributor, they should contact SignDNA directly and include a link to the content in their question. SignDNA will respond within five (5) working days, in line with our External Complaints Procedure.

In making collection items available for public access online, SignDNA makes every effort to fulfil its legal and ethical obligations. However, if you believe an item has been posted on this website that is in breach of your rights, contains sensitive content or may be regarded as offensive or defamatory, please contact us. Your message should include your name, the title of the item, and your relevance to the material in question. We will assess your request and respond to your message within five (5) working days.
