David and Rachel McKee lead the establishment of the first (and only) NZSL interpreting course, in Auckland. Rachel explains that it is expected the graduates will work mostly in community areas, such as medical, legal, employment, and welfare. Some are also expected to work in the education field enabling Deaf access to education. The reporter references how Deaf education had an oral focus for nearly 100 years, before sign language was endorsed.
