HomeHow you can helpShare your story!

There are many ways you can volunteer to help keep this archive alive and breathing, and telling a story about the content in the SignDNA archive in NZSL is one of them! The videos you see in SignDNA’s archive are just one view of the overall picture. Every and each story that is submitted to SignDNA will help the archive become alive. Your story will provide more content and context to the current material we have available on our website.

SignDNA would love it if you can share your stories about events and people you see in this archive. Your stories will make the archive richer with Deaf history. For example:

  • Were you at the 1989 World Games for the Deaf in Christchurch? What was it like?
  • Did you play in the Trans-Tasman Games? What was your favourite moment?
  • Do you have a favourite memory about Bruce McHattie? Daniel Beech? John McRae?
  • Did you attend St Dominics School for the Deaf in Fielding? What was your favourite lunch-time activity?

Any stories you have, about any of the videos we have in the SignDNA archive is welcome! It is best if the story is your own experience rather than a story someone else has told you.

How to film your story

We plan to post details on how to record your story. In the meantime, Watch Us contains a great resource on how to record your story in NZSL, and we’d highly recommend visiting their website for useful tips!

Submitting a story

SignDNA does not necessarily endorse the stories submitted on this site. Not all stories submitted will be published on the website.

If SignDNA chooses to share a story we will be in touch with the person directly to confirm permission and any changes that are made or required.

The SignDNA team reserves the right to edit the stories for clarity and add supplementary text through the use of ‘notes’ to add context to a story.
