During ‘Deafness Awareness Week’ in 1995, One Network News runs a news clip that highlights why Teletext is invaluable to the Deaf community. We see some behind-the-scenes of the captioners hard at work, preparing the captions for the news that will be broadcast at 6pm that evening, including them attending the newsroom production meeting in the mid-afternoons.

At the time of this article, about 50 hours per week of captioning is funded by NZ on Air across all 3 channels.

Patreena Bryan tells us that access to captioned news enables her and other Deaf people to discuss national & world events when they get together, just like hearing people can.
