Deaf Southern Star: 2015 (Vol. 37, No. 2)
Some of the items featured in the St Dominic’s Catholic Deaf Centre’s ‘Deaf Southern Star’ (Vol. 37, No. 2, 2015) newsletter:
- The New Zealand Catholic Deaf Ministries Conference is hosted in Auckland during Queen’s Birthday Weekend (May 30 – June 1). Over 30 attended, 20 of whom came from Australia. Mary Johnson gave a presentation on her background: growing up in Dunedin, making the long trip by train and boat to St. Dominic’s after it had opened in Wellington in 1944, and her adult involvement over many years in the Deaf Community and Catholic Deaf Ministry with Daniel Beech and the Dominican Sisters in Auckland. Her presentation gave us all some great insights into the early Catholic Deaf education years in New Zealand.
- David Loving-Molloy and Judith Mason led interesting presentations on: Challenges in Deaf Ministry and Ideas Parish Deaf friendly and Community. David looked at some challenges ahead with marginalised groups and reaching out to the youth, and Judith looked at Deaf ministry and how to make parishes more Deaf friendly and involve the community more.
