Auckland Deaf Society newsletter: March 1989

Some of the items featured in Auckland Deaf Society’s March 1989 newsletter:

  • There wasn’t a February issue as everyone was tired after the 16th World Games of the Deaf. For most NZ people, it was a once in a lifetime experience. It was good to see some Deaf people from ADS involved in voluntary work during the games. ADS played host to several overseas visitors at our buffet evenings. They were given a set of coasters as a souvenir of their visit to the Society’s clubrooms.
  • Auckland Deaf Basketball Club held a picnic at Long Bay on 29 January. There was a good crowd with games (scottish logs, Wellington boot throwing, split peanuts, tug-o-war, 100 metres run, Mr and Miss Muscle and an egg throwing competition). Everyone enjoyed themselves!
  • The NZ Association for the Deaf says that so much has been happening at N.Z.A.D. It was agreed that we need the Deaf News back. It has been missing for three years. John Hunt and Ken Brain have volunteered to prepare the first edition to be published in May with the support of Kelston School for Deaf and the Council.
  • Pat Dugdale of Wellington has finished the collecting of information from N.Z. and around the world, on setting up an Interpreter Training School in New Zealand and has presented her report to the National Foundation for the Deaf.
