The Governor-General Sir Bernard and Lady Fergusson visited Kelston School for the Deaf on 4 April 1964. They were entertained by swimming and gymnastics display by its deaf pupils. Straight afterwards, they visited Auckland Deaf Society, on the day that the upstairs Balmoral clubroom was officially opened by the Governor-General.

“Saturday the 4 April 1964 – an exciting day in the life of the School for the Deaf. Their Excellencies Sir Bernard and Lady Fergusson were paying an official visit to meet children, staff, parents and friends of the School for Deaf, and to gain some insight into the work carried on. After a marathon effort on behalf of all the staff members, the school was looking spick and span and really at its best for the day. Promptly at 2pm, as the Vice-Regal car proceeded up the drive, Scout Willie Griffiths hoisted the New Zealand Ensign. Their Excellencies were greeted by Mr Allen, Acting Principal during Dr Dale’s visit overseas. They were also accompanied by Lady Fergusson’s mother, who had expressed a special desire to accompany them on the visit,” (p.54, Source: Celebrating 50 years of Deaf Education in Auckland)
