  • ‘Inside Out’ interviews Hilary McCormack: Deaf education, advocacy and technology

‘Inside Out’ interviews Hilary McCormack, discussing her experience living in two worlds – the Deaf world and hearing world. Unable to learn NZSL in her early days at van Asch, she later would return to teach at the school and become an advocate for the Deaf community including being involved with the establishment of the NZSL Dictionary and Government funding for a NZ Relay Service. Hillary says the cost to set up a relay service would be “chicken feed to Telecom” and would retire once a national service was set up! Ian Cocks, Principal at the time is also interviewed. He talks about the major shifts at van Asch around teaching philosophy, towards bilingualism.
