Some of the items featured in the 1966-67 Summer Issue of ‘NZ Deaf News’ (Vol. 4, No. 2): 

  • An editorial on the unlikeness of the Child Welfare Division allowing the adoption of a child by a deaf couple, for “who would hear the baby crying?!”
  • ADS reports that there will be seven deaf couples getting married this year, and so, there will be more chances of winning the married and single tug-o-war competition!
  • The final meeting of the Friends of the Deaf was held in the lounge of Christchurch Deaf Club, with the Club’s President thanking the FOD for all they had done. 
  • The Auckland indoor basketball team recaps its year, with its team capturing the Cunliffe Cup again, beating Christchurch 58-6, the highest score since 1951.

Establishing the ‘NZ Deaf News’ in 1962

John Hunt's involvement with NZ Deaf News spanned 23 years. Upon moving to New Zealand in 1962, he was surprised to find out that there was no NZ Deaf News at a time where radio and TV (which was inaccessible for Deaf people) were one of the main medium of news. He established the NZ Deaf News publication with a group of 10 people. The first issue was only 8 pages and with donations, the next one was 16 pages. It grew exponentially and was the place to go for Deaf-related news.
