Ready to lend helping hands to deaf

With a final flick of the fingers these students of New Zealand’s first sign language interpreting school prepare to graduate.

Signing out of their last class are (from left): Tracy Greening, from Auckland, Rachel Locker, from Wellington, Madeline David, from Christchurch, Brenda Glazer, from Whitianga, Linda Prouse, from Auckland, and Megan Mansfield, of Auckland.

Their class of eight graduates tonight after four months’ study, learning the variety of sign language used by New Zealand deaf people.

Three will take up public service jobs working as interpreters for deaf people in courts, hospitals and Labour, Education and Social Welfare Department officers.
