The 1st Wallace Williams Memorial Comedy Evening was held in March 2003 at a packed room at Auckland Deaf Society. It was named after the long-time Auckland Deaf Society president, Wallace Williams, who had passed away the year before, and who was known to have a passion for comedy. DEAFinitely Youth Group organised this event to fundraise for their impending trip to Montreal, Canada in July 2003 for the World Federation for the Deaf Congress. Many Deaf people participated by putting on various performances and sign-signing.

On the Spot: Two Handshapes, One Creative NZSL Story!

Pam Croskery shares how she and Nicholas Lessing won the Wallace Williams Memorial Trophy in 2007. Due to a shortage of entrants, they were each given two handshapes and asked to create a NZSL story on the spot. Their quick creativity paid off, with the story proving popular and leading to a surprise win!
