Napier to have Silent Olympic Representatives

Two Napier indoor basketball players have been selected for the Silent Olympics at Washington D.C. in June.

The two players are Mervyn and Ray Foreman.

Their selection for the New Zealand team for the Silent Olympics was announced this week.

Both brothers, who have played basketball since 1949, have represented Hawke’s Bay in inter-provincial play.

In 1951 the brothers moved to Auckland, where they played for the Deaf Demons and also represented Auckland.

In 1955 they returned to Napier and since then they have played with the Napier team Tigers. They have also taken an interest in Hawke’s Bay association matters.

The Hawke’s Bay indoor basketball season will begin on Monday with the first of a series of grading games. Grading matches will also be played on April 12, and the 1965 competition will get under way on April 26.

Sixty teams entered in last year’s contest. The standard of play this year is expected to reach a new level following the completion of a summer season.

Over Easter the association will stage its 16th annual tournament and teams from all parts of the North Island are expected to compete.

Highlights of the season are expected to be matches against a New Zealand University team at Napier during May and matches against touring South Australian and Queensland teams in June and July.

Four inter-provincial matches will also be played.

From Lions Club to Taradale: Ruth’s Time with Hawke’s Bay Deaf Club

Ruth moved to Napier in 1982 and first met the local Deaf community through its Christmas events. At the time, the group met at the Lions Club premises. When the Taradale building was purchased, members of the Hawke’s Bay Deaf Club came together to renovate the space, pulling down walls to make it larger and more Deaf-friendly. Ruth later joined the committee and helped plan the 10th anniversary of the club’s new home before moving to Auckland.
