The Auckland Deaf community gathers for the Miss Deaf Auckland competition, organised by Adrienne Killen. The top three are selected to represent Auckland in the upcoming Miss Deaf New Zealand pageant.

The Auckland Deaf community gathers for the Miss Deaf Auckland competition, organised by Adrienne Killen. The top three are selected to represent Auckland in the upcoming Miss Deaf New Zealand pageant. Dave Jamieson, at that time the host of TV1’s popular ‘Blind Date’ television show, was the guest judge. Melissa Lakeman, a 16 year old student at the Kelston Girls High School Deaf unit was awarded first place. Second place went to Jackie Anderson and third place to Julie-Anne Taylor. The three went on to compete in the 1990 Miss Deaf New Zealand pageant, timed to coincide with the 34th New Zealand Games for the Deaf in Auckland during 19-22 October.
