Some of the items featured in ‘Ephpheta: September 1987 (Vol. 10, No. 2)’:
- The New Zealand Catholic Deaf Association held its Annual General Meeting in July, and it was encouraging to see a good number of Catholic Deaf attend and take active parts in the meeting. Read the report of their AGM on Page 6.
- The announcement that St Dominic’s has been forced to close down was a sad blow to past and present pupils of the school, their families and friends. There will be a final reunion in 1989 for ex-pupils and Sisters of St Dominic’s when it celebrates its 45th Jubilee.
- The Manawatu Deaf Society celebrated its Silver Jubilee. On the fourth of July 1987, a dine and dance evening was held which was attended by over one hundred deaf people, several being out-of-towners. The highlight of the evening was the bestowing of Life Membership on three hardworking deaf people. Joan Bailey, the Society’s founder, Daniel Beech and Barbara Hazelwood.
- Did you know?? Two women signers on television’s ‘News Review’ are deaf! Eight deaf people applied for the position and, after being shown around the Studio Complex in Christchurch, four dropped out, leaving four for the final interviews. Two of these have the job of signing the news and the other two were retained to give assistance by going over the News Scripts and ensuring that the correct signs are used. The signs are mainly New Zealand ones but where no suitable signs are available, Australian signs are used.
