Some of the items featured in the St Dominic’s Catholic Deaf Centre’s ‘Deaf Southern Star’ (Vol. 36, No. 2, 2014) newsletter:

  • St Dominic’s School for the Deaf celebrated their 70th anniversary reunion over Queen’s Birthday Weekend (Saturday 31 May 2014). The 14 inch square Jubilee Cake with St. Dominic’s Crest was cut by Sr. Molly Griffin OP, Carol Cotter (the earliest ex-pupil present from the 1944 intake) and Raychel Pinfold (the last St. Dominic’s ex-pupil before the school closed).
  • 27 ex-pupils from St Dominics (the 1964 rubella group) also celebrated their 50th birthday party at Manawatu Deaf Society.
  • Patrick (Pac) Thompson passed away after a short illness on 29 March 2014. On 2 April 2014, Judith Mason and Rachel Marr attended the funeral at Wharekawa Marae.
  • On Sunday the 1st of June a meeting was held at the Diocesan Centre in Palmerston North, for Catholic Chaplains, Pastoral Workers, Community Leaders and Interpreters involved in Catholic Deaf Ministry. It was the first time such a meeting had been held for a number of years.
