Apart from the two weeks in Washington where the games were held, the members of the New Zealand team visited the New York World Fair, Disneyland and Hollywood.

Ray Forman’s favourite place was Phoenix, Arizona.

“Everything is white and clean — but hot,” he said. “The temperature was 107 degrees when we were there.”

They met Senator Barry Goldwater and saw his huge ranch.
