The Auckland Sign Singers were invited to perform with others in a three-hour entertainment special to celebrate 1990 which was broadcast live from Bastion Point on TV One at 7.30pm. They performed “Two Strong Hearts” on New Years Eve. ‘Welcome 1990 Haere Mai’ was broadcast on TV One. It marked the beginning of 24 hours of special, all-New Zealand TV programming and began with New Zealand feature films and excerpts from past television programmes. Here, six were Deaf members of Auckland Deaf Society with two hearing prompters.

The 1990 Commonwealth Games were held in Auckland from 24 January – 3 February 1990. For the opening of the games, 20 deaf choir members participated in a 600 strong opening ceremony choir.
