New Zealanders, Hayden Costar and John Ooteman compete in the cycling individual time trial event. It was on 15 July 1985, starting at 9am at Emma Wood Park, Ventura. John won a gold medal in the 35km time trial with 51:10 minutes. Competitors in the time trial left at two-minute intervals and Ooteman showed his fine form when he passed his first competitor and finished “miles” ahead.

It was John’s second gold medal in this event, having previously won his first in Koln 1981.
