World Deaf Games lost to NZ – but not through Boks
CHRISTCHURCH, Today (PA). — New Zealand was passed over in its bid to host the World Deaf Games in 1985 — but not because of any Springbok tour snub, prominent local sports administrator, Mr Alan Barrett, believes.
Mr Barrett was one of a five-member New Zealand delegation which included the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr H G Hay, and Sir Ronald Scott, who attended the World Deaf Games in Cologne last month aiming to secure the next games for Christchurch four years from now.
But New Zealand, in spite of a strong campaign based on the successful style which resulted in Christchurch winning the 1974 Commonwealth Games and the World Veteran Games earlier this year, lost on a close vote to Los Angeles.
Mr Barrett, who returned here yesterday after a stopover in Hong Kong, said the Springbok rugby tour issue was hardly raised at all.
