Teaching the deaf since 1973

“Today, deaf education has got a cultural aspect to it.” – Terry O’Brien

Teaching for almost 50 years has proved a rewarding career for Terry O’Brien, who has witnessed the development of deaf education.

O’Brien, 68, began teaching when he was 20, in Westport in 1969. In 1972, he did additional training to teach deaf children, then he began at Russell Street School in 1973.

Since then he has taught hundreds of deaf children in Palmerston North, at Russell Street, Ross Intermediate, and for much of the time, at the Freyberg High School’s Deaf Education Centre.
