Deaf angry at threat facing News Review

Deaf people are angered and disappointed at the threat facing the TV show News Review.

TVNZ said the programme was threatened and funding must be sought from the Broadcasting Commission or through sponsorship.

Association of the Deaf president Hilary McCormack said News Review acknowledged the need for deaf New Zealanders to have access to the news.

“It [also] acknowledged for the first time New Zealand sign language, the language of deaf New Zealanders whether Maori, Pakeha or other.” Ms McCormack said the threat of losing the programme may mean deaf people would demand captions on daily news bulletins or a later captioned news similar to the late Maori news every day.
