Black magic hat

Vic researcher Sean Fahey was wearing the right hat when Black Magic won the America’s Cup — but he couldn’t throw it in the air to celebrate.

His hat is actually a replica of the New Zealand boat, 71cm long and 110cm high, complete with seascape, dolphin, buoy, fish and an array of sponsors’ stickers.

Mr Fahey made the hat, largely from paper, cardboard and papier-maché, to show his support for the Kiwi challenge and caused quite a stir when he wore it to the university, where he is working on the New Zealand Sign Language Dictionary project in the English Language Institute.

Now he is getting ready to show it in public. “When the team parade is on in Wellington I will wear the hat if it’s not too windy!” he said.

It’s his second yacht hat; he made one for the 1992 campaign, and plans to make another when New Zealand defends the cup in 1999-2000.
