John’s Early School Days at Titirangi

2025
  • Deaf Education
John recalls his time as a student at Titirangi School for the Deaf, starting as a day pupil before becoming a boarder. He remembers the layout of the school well, including shortcuts to the bedrooms at the top of Lopdell House. The annual Christmas party was a highlight, with Deaf children dressing up for the occasion. One year, John wore a playing card costume made by his mum. He fondly remembers four Christmas parties before the tradition ended when the school moved to Kelston. He left school at 14 and a half after landing a job.
