Here’s to Games
Three officials of the World Games for the Deaf pause to toast the success of the venture, as teams from more than 30 countries arrive in Christchurch.
They are Mr Marco Lue, of Italy, a wrestling official, Ms Margaret Coutts, of Christchurch, the vice-chairman of the organising committee and Mr Boudewijn De Roose, the secretary-general of the Belgian Deaf Sports Association.
Although the official opening is still a week away, organisers are already coping with such headaches as the Iranian and Danish teams becoming lost on their way here. The Iranians were traced to Tokyo Airport, the Danes turned up in Bangkok.
The 1300 competitors, along with officials, team managers and interpreters are being accommodated at hotels and motels around the city.
The opening ceremony at Queen Elizabeth II Park next Saturday will be followed by the first soccer matches.
Tickets to events will be available at PostBank in Cathedral Square, Armagh and High Sts, and at the Canterbury University student union centre.
