Deaf friends

Deaf people in the Wellington region now have a new organisation, Friends of the Deaf, an umbrella group for all the deaf organisations in the area.

The steering committee has been working for a year doing the groundwork to become an incorporated society. They are now ready to enlist public support. At present they are low on funds, the only funds so far have come from the pockets of the steering committee.

Objectives of the society are:

  1. An organisation of hearing and deaf people with the primary object of providing a deaf centre in Wellington.
  2. To provide financial support for social occupational recreational and educational facilities for deaf groups.
  3. To provide funds for maintenance and management of the deaf centre.
  4. To provide funds for expenditure not already covered by existing deaf organisations.
  5. They will not be acting in competition with other deaf organisations in the area of fund raising, nor will they duplicate the activities of existing deaf groups.

They will be holding their inaugural meeting on June 11 at the Blind Foundation’s premises in Hanky Street Wellington. Anyone interested should contact George Hallatt, 882-068.
