Cancer forces athlete to pull out of Games
Olympic wrestling nominee Robert Algie is battling cancer in Palmerston North Hospital.
Algie, 31, was one of five Wrestling Union nominations for the Seoul games team, due to be named by Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association selectors on Tuesday.
The 96-kilogram Featherston shearer, at his peak New Zealand’s most powerful wrestler, has accepted he will not include Olympic representation among his achievements.
He has asked that his nomination be withdrawn.
