During her time as Secretary of NZDSA, Shona McGhie took on a number of responsibilities, including attending several international CISS congresses. She also travelled to Malaysia for the Asia-Pacific Oceania meeting, where she was the only Kiwi in attendance. While the Asia-Pacific concept didn’t quite suit New Zealand’s needs, it was still a valuable experience. Christchurch 1989 often came up in conversations at the 1993 Games in Bulgaria—many delegates remembered it fondly, describing it as open-minded, welcoming, and unlike any other host city. Shona recalls feeling overwhelmed during the long congress sessions delivered in International Sign, with the New Zealand delegates supporting each other through the challenging days. She even remembers a few people dozing off during the CISS meetings! Despite the intensity, Shona came away with lasting friendships.
