The two teams played in a curtain raiser to the Bledisloe Cup at Stadium Australia on 3 August 2002. The sixth New Zealand Deaf Rugby team won the new Cochlear Cup 19-17 thanks to a penalty goal to flyhalf Opeti Finaulangi with only two minutes remaining. New Zealand Assistant Coach said the win was fantastic for the Deaf Blacks and would position them well going into the Deaf Rugby World Championships in Auckland, 2002.
