Team for deaf games backed
The Auckland Deaf Society has reversed a previous decision and decided to support the team being sent to the Olympic Games for deaf people in Helsinki in August by the Wellington Deaf Sports Club.
The reason is that the Wellington club has invited deaf Auckland wrestler John McRae to join its team—and has paid £200 towards his expenses.
The liaison officer in Auckland, Mr B. McHattie, said today: “The Auckland Deaf Society previously refused to support the team because it felt that its money could be better spent on helping deaf people as a whole rather than financing one or two people to travel to the games.
“But now the Wellington club has invited John McRae and made the wonderful gesture of donating £200 for him, and the committee feels that it would be silly to stand in his way.”
