Hostel for deaf out of funds, faces closure

“We have applied to the Government for a subsidy, but until we get this we have nothing,” Mr Lewis said.

In the past the centre has been financed solely by trusts, legacies and donations.

“The deaf are the most misunderstood of the handicapped group,” said Mr Lewis. “Because they don’t look physically handicapped people don’t notice them. But their needs are great.”

Mr Lewis said he didn’t know where the 15 hostel residents would go. “Most had no family,” he said. “And their families who could cope.”
