Deaf athletes for World Games

These five young men are members of what is believed to be the first team of deaf athletes to represent New Zealand at an all-deaf World Games. From Wellington, they are touring the North Island in their car in a fund-raising bid to help finance their trip to the games. They will compete in indoor basketball, table tennis and 100, 200, and 400-metre events as well as the 400-metre relay. The games are being held in Helsinki, Finland, during August. Deaf community was home for Margaret Coutts

An obituary on Margaret Coutts who was "the mother of deaf sports", an active leader and strong positive role-model to younger members of the Deaf community. She was the first female president of the Christchurch Deaf Club, and was awarded a NZ Commemoration Medal for her contributions in 1990.

Deaf Folk Conquer their Handicap

On a recent Saturday, I was lucky enough to meet members of the Auckland Deaf Society at a working bee they were holding to improve the grounds of the city's Deaf Welfare Centre. The centre, incidentially, is a very fine building – it has the biggest sports hall in Auckland with a floor area 110 by 60 feet.
