Born in Mumbai, India where his parents ran a tea farm, John Peterson is filmed at his home in Auckland, the Eddowes Pensioner Village, at Balmoral, next to Auckland Deaf Society. It was the first village for the elderly Deaf to be erected in New Zealand. John’s family moved to New Zealand in 1947, and it was not until a chance encounter with Wallace William’s parents that he vividly and at-depth explains his experience of travelling to Sumner School for the Deaf from Auckland via train and boat. Towards the end of the footage, John shows us some of his photos. Filmed on 3 August 2003 by Dorothy Jones and Mary Johnson.
