Sir Edmund criticises PM
AUCKLAND, Jan 2 (PA). – The New Zealand mountaineer who conquered Mt Everest 30 years ago, Sir Edmund Hillary, has criticised the decision of the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, to remove handicapped Japanese climbers from Mt Cook.
Sir Edmund said that airlifting the climbers from Mt Cook would cause a “negative reaction” in the international mountaineering world.
Chances
“I believe that the Japanese climbers can be justifiably annoyed by this action. The fact that you are deaf will not make any difference to your chances of falling down a crevasse, and even if you have acute hearing the likelihood of your being able to take evasive action if an avalanche is roaring down on you is rather unlikely.”
