Fears for deaf climbers

TIMARU, Today (PA). — Seven Japanese climbers flew on to Mt Cook yesterday, ignoring warnings of avalanche danger near their base camp.

The team, members of the Tokyo Deaf and Mute Climbing Society, have gone on to the mountain without a guide.

“There’s a fair bit of apprehension for their safety,” the Mt Cook National Park ranger, Mr Ray Slater said.

“They are going into an area (the Plateau Hut) where ice and rockfall is not uncommon, and the unstable snow is another hazard.”
