Able to talk
For the first time in their lives, Pam and Kaz, who are profoundly deaf, can talk to each other by telephone. A Telethon Trust grant of $135,000 helped to start a national fund to which deaf people can apply for telephone-types. People who cannot hear, even with amplified telephones, can use these to get in touch with each other by phone. The Combined Societies for the Deaf is hoping to get telephone-type equipment in airports, police stations, taxi offices and emergency service switchboards.
