In 1998, a team of nine players from New Zealand Deaf Tenpin Bowling competed at the International Bowling Championship for the Deaf in Taipei, Taiwan. It was the first time New Zealand had taken part in this global event. The delay in joining came down to a mix-up over terminology while New Zealanders called it ten pin bowling, other countries like the USA and those in Europe simply used the word bowling. This led to confusion, with many in New Zealand thinking it referred to outdoor bowls.
